Shoe Care

Some tips in caring for your footwear:

  1. Clean your shoes often, at least once a month. Clean your shoes before polishing to remove the dirt and grime and all the things you walked on.
  2. Polish your shoes. Polishing nourishes, keeps the suppleness and prevents that material from drying out.
  3. Protect your shoes. Waterproofing and general protection prevents that dirt and grime from penetrating the surface of your shoe. This allows for easier cleaning and polishing the next time.

Purchasing footwear is one thing, but taking care of them is another. The proper care of leather requires cleaning and conditioning regularly to keep it strong and resilient. Tana is a very well known brand, offering 5 lines of protection: Leather, Suede and Nubuck, Outdoor, Sport, and Universal.  Under each line they offer most everything to take care of each respected type of material; cleaners, creams, polishes, and protectors.  If you have a smooth leather upper, you will want to look at products under their Leather line.  If you have Suede and Nubuck uppers, the respective line will offer the right cleaners, polishes and protectors.  The Outdoor line is for your oiled leathers, using an oil spray, so you want to make sure you don’t use these sprays on regular leathers.  The Sport line is for your runners, and sneakers and fabric type uppers.  The Universal line is your protector spray for multiple material finishes.

Lexol Leather Conditioner, is used for softening leather that has gotten hard after being exposed to too many of nature's harsh elements.

Waterproofing products are a great way to waterproof your footwear.  We carry a few products, mostly for leather uppers, whether it be full grain, or suede and nubuck.  With Nikwax, the leather sucks in the product, clogging the pores and sealing the leather to a degree, thus waterproofing your footwear.

Woly is a brand of polish that we carry, which for some colors offers a bit more pigment than other brands, thus covering a little better.  Easy to use, it requires a buffing, but there is a sponge provided to help with that.

Kiwi is another very well known product line, offering 3 lines of care: Leather, Outdoor, and Sport-Leisure.  We carry the paste polishes, brushes and cloths from Kiwi, with a variety of color options.  Kiwi paste polish needs a buffing after, but the end result is a very nice finish.  There is a decent amount of pigment in the paste, so covering really worn areas is no problem.

There are many other brands of product, so for a more in depth look at what we carry, stop in and ask one of the sales associates for assistance.  We would be happy to help over the phone as well, so please feel free to give us a call.
